- Profile: Symphony environmental Ltd is specialised in environmental packaging solutions and has developed the d2w technology. D2w is an oxo-biodegradable technology that will allow conventional plastics, such as carrier bags, refuse sacks, food bags and other packaging totally degrade to carbon dioxide, water and a small amount of biomass. The degradation does not need a biologically active environment to start degrading but can be accelerated by a combination of sunlight, heat, stress and air. Once the process is initiated, the degradation will continue even in landfill. The rate of degradation can be controlled taking between as little as 60 days or as long as 5 or 6 years to degrade. The strength, clarity, sealability and printing properties are exactly the same as for their non-degradable counterparts during the useful life cycle of the product. D2w oxo-biodegradable plastics have been extensively tested by external well-known companies for its degradation characteristics and are also food contact safe. The chemical elements used in d2w totally degradable products have been successfully tested for soil safety and eco-toxicity in compliance with DIN V 54900-3. These demonstrated that the compost with additive did not cause any toxic or harmful effects or by-products and is therefore totally soil safe. D2w totally degradable plastics are environmentally responsible and will be helpful in minimizing the problems associated with plastic pollution. The d2w products are reusable and recyclable and the additive can be introduced into a recyclate material. D2w technology is available in two product types: The Additive which is included in the production process and finished plastic products. Certificates: Comprehensively tested and proven D2w totally degradable have been extensively tested by RAPRA Technology, Europe leading independent plastics research establishment and increasingly by specialized test establishments around the world. These test include accelerated weathering in accordance with ASTM D2565;1999 and Oxidation Induction time in accordance with Polymer Degradation and Stability, Vol.72(2001) 367-376. Product development is on-going and confirmation of degradability is incorporated in the course of routine quality control procedures. Certified food safe Migration tests by RAPRA on d2w totally degradable film have shown it to be compliant with EC Directive 2002/72/EC and its amendment 2004/19/EC and UK Statutory Instrument 2002/3008 and is therefore certified safe for direct food contact. It is also compliant with FDA Chapter 21 Section 177.1520. Environmentally safe The chemical elements used in d2w totally degradable products have been successfully tested for soil safety and eco-toxicity in compliance with DIN V 54900-3. These demonstrated that the compost with additive did not cause any toxic or harmful effects or by-products and is therefore totally soil safe.
