  • Profile: Algeos was founded in 1896 as a leather and grindery factor (a shoe repairers' wholesaler) but in the late 1980's was foundering due to the decline in the shoe repair trade owing to changes in footwear fashions and the management's inability to move away from old fashioned practices and cope with larger scale competition. The company was taken over in 1989, when the potential for alternative avenues was foreseen. In 1991 the sales team was expanded with the view to build on the local orthopaedic market already supplied by the company within a fifty mile radius. Without initial specialist knowledge the sales force was able to introduce the company and to develop good working relationships with new customers throughout the United Kingdom. Originally concentrating on two or three main products as an introduction the company expanded their range as demand grew, taking business from more complacent competitors who could not provide the range or the service. In 1997 the company expanded into a larger 6000 square foot factory, employing eight new staff and investing in new manufacturing machinery and put into place a factory manager to run the ever growing logistics operation. With the move allowing a natural cut off point, the company withdrew from the ailing shoe repair trade to concentrate on our new markets of podiatry and physiotherapy. These specialist markets complement their supply of larger scale materials and components and in 1998 a specialist manager was recruited to consolidate and build sales in these areas. At the same time as withdrawal from the shoe repair business, following the liquidation of a locally based supplier of shoe sundry retail items, manufacturing assets were bought from the supplier and algeo's were able to continue supplying former shoe repair wholesale competitors. Following continued growth in 1999 the company moved to its present premises in speke South Liverpool, a 16 000 square foot industrial unit with a further increase in staff to and new bulk material handling machinery. Today A. algeo ltd. Are seen as the leading suppliers of materials, components and machinery to the orthopaedic manufacturing trades in the United Kingdom and the republic of Ireland. Our business covers a range of specialist medical professions-prosthetics, orthotics and podiatry, and to a lesser extent physiotherapy and occupational therapy. Over the past eight years the business has developed to the stage where we are involved with all outlets in orthotic fabrication.
